What the Home Affairs page says
The Department of Home Affairs page for the Visitor visa (subclass 600) Tourist stream (apply outside Australia) lists a cost "From AUD250.00 (concessions apply in limited circumstances)" and a stay of up to 12 months. For processing times, it points applicants to its visa processing time guide tool, which it describes as "a guide only and not specific to your application".
When we checked the page (last updated 1 July 2026), it did not list a flight booking or reservation among its requirements.
Some passport holders may be eligible for an Electronic Travel Authority or an eVisitor instead. The Home Affairs page links to its "Explore visa options" tool to check.
So do you need a reservation?
Based on the official visa page, a flight booking isn't a listed requirement. You may not need anything from us for this application. The document checklist inside the online application is the final word, so check it when you apply.
When a reservation can still help
- Your host or sponsor is writing an invitation letter and wants exact dates to quote.
- You're combining Australia with other countries whose visas do ask for travel plans — for example a Schengen application. See our Schengen guide.
- You want one consistent plan so your stated dates, leave approval and invitation all match.
Don't buy a non-refundable ticket too early
Processing times vary, and the Home Affairs tool shows recently decided applications rather than a promise for yours. A non-refundable fare bought before a decision is money at risk. If you want something on paper in the meantime, a flight reservation documents your plan without paying the fare.
